The Family Room

My home reflects the people who live in it. We do not decorate from magazines or keep current with the latest home fashions. The things we choose to keep and display are bits of ourselves, our lives, and people we love. In our family room you will not find art prints, or houseplants (truthfully, I kill them), or matching furniture.

What you will find are family photos, a vase my father-in-law brought back from Arizona on his last trip out there, musical instruments, bouquets of knitting needles, Legos, toy cars, books, comfortable sturdy furniture that hides the dirt, a beautiful table my son made, tissue paper flowers B made hanging from the lamps, a bookshelf built by my husband, quilts made by my mother and me, and precious blankets knit by my mother-in-law during her last year with us.

She made one for each member of the family and used scraps from all of them to make Mr. Pipes and I a very large and colorful blanket for our couch. She has been gone 15 years now, but she still hugs us, every time we wrap up in her lovingly made stitches.

This is the room we play in, rough house the little one in, make music in, read in, and where we spend quiet moments watching the birds just outside the window. It will never make it into Better Homes and Gardens, and I like it that way.

Knitting, knitting, knitting

I am addicted to my knitting.  Today I finished off my July socks while visiting with friends.  I had the great pleasure of watching someone dear to me learning to knit “get it”.  There is something so delightful about seeing a new knitter’s joy when they realize that they are actually forming stitches!  Our conversation rambled all over the place, as it usually does.  One topic we hit upon was the effect women have on those around them through the things they make, especially after they have left us.  Also, we talked about how much of themselves women put into their creations that time and circumstance might not otherwise allow.  Have you ever seen an Amish quilt, simple fabrics and the lavish quilting made of perfect stitches?  I will probably post on this another time.

The July socks are done for the Sock a Month KAL 6.  They are for B made from Cascade Fixation, size 3 needles, about a woman’s size 5.

We like to start them young around here!

A few shots of the offspring

Geoffrey is home!!!

Three out of four playing Lego Star Wars.  Two out of four really, the littlest is just along for the fun and noise.

W is making sauce with Mommy.  He loves to cook, that one.

Cucumbers

I have neglected my garden recently and the cucumbers are rebelling.  There was one hold out, however, and I am sure he will be extra sweet :)

Journaling- online or in ink???

This is something I have given a lot of thought to in recent weeks. Here is an article on the topic by the author of The Red Leather Diary, Lily Koppel.

Rhinebeck, can we get there?

We are hoping to visit NY this fall. How do I convince the family that they really do want to go to the NY Sheep and Wool Festival?

Seeing the folks is nice and all (Hi Mom!), but Rhinebeck is only four hours away!!!

Moleskine

I am not real big on names but in this instance, there is a difference that matters.  A Moleskine is not the average journal.  It feels good, the pages are smooth and not prone to falling out, and it smells good.  Smelling good is important.  You can’t write in something that has an offensive odor.

Good things

We have had a wonderful few days here. Today the house was full of beloved friends and their children. At one point we had sixteen wild wee beasties! Actually, several were teenagers, a good chunk fell in the middle, and the rest were wee : ) My family is blessed beyond measure to have such good friends.

My garden is coming in. There will not be enough to preserve but that is alright. I don’t know how to and I am really enjoying going out in the evening and literally picking dinner. The fresh herbs are wonderful!

These are some of the good things in life.
